Ernest & Mary Michael were pillars of service to the San Mateo, Grants and Milan communities, having lived and raised their family for more than 60 years in McKinley/Cibola County.
With a passion and dedication to raising their children and grandchildren through a love of agriculture and stewardship, their legacy lives on today through their six children, 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
This scholarship honors the Michael Family legacy and their passion for service, community and stewardship through future generations of leaders.
Ernest’s Green Thumb
Ernest “Whimpy” Michael was a man of few words, but was renowned for having a green thumb.
Ernest was also a staple at the Bi-County Fair each year for his prized agriculture. A farmer by trade, he took great pride in his half-acre garden each year and entered many blue ribbon treasures from his carefully curated garden.
It’s All in the Family
All of Ernest and Mary’s children, and several of their grandchildren, were active participants in 4-H and entered award-winning projects each year at the Bi-County Fair.

Chief Mary
While Mary spent many years caring for her growing family, she also worked part-time and served as a clerk for the Milan County Court for many years before retiring.
Her passion project, however, was serving as the Fire Chief for the San Mateo Volunteer Fire Department for more than 10 years.
